The most common signs and symptoms of MMN include:
Asymmetrical muscle weakness, typically starting in the hands or feet
Gradual progression of weakness over time
Muscle cramps and involuntary muscle twitches (fasciculations)
Decreased grip strength and difficulty with fine motor tasks
Foot drop or difficulty lifting the foot when walking
Muscle wasting (atrophy) in advanced stages
It’s important to note that MMN primarily affects motor function, and sensory symptoms like numbness or tingling are generally absent. The disorder usually begins on one side of the body and may spread to both sides as it progresses.
While living with MMN can be challenging, there are several self-management techniques that can help improve your quality of life:
Stay active: Engage in low-impact exercises to maintain muscle strength and flexibility. Consult with a physical therapist to develop a safe and effective exercise routine.
Adapt your environment: Use assistive devices and make modifications to your home and workplace to accommodate any physical limitations.
Manage fatigue: Balance activity with rest periods to avoid overexertion. Prioritize tasks and conserve energy for essential activities.
Maintain a healthy diet: Eat a balanced diet rich in nutrients to support overall health and potentially help manage inflammation.
Practice stress management: Utilize relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breathing or engage in hobbies to reduce stress levels.
Join a support group: Connect with others who have MMN to share experiences, coping strategies, and emotional support.
Stay informed: Keep up-to-date with the latest research and treatment options for MMN to make informed decisions about your care.
Living with MMN can be challenging, but with proper management and treatment, many people with this condition can maintain a good quality of life. It’s crucial to work closely with your healthcare team to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses your specific needs and symptoms. Remember that early diagnosis and treatment can lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to consult a neurologist if you experience persistent muscle weakness or other concerning symptoms.
LUX Infusion helps manage the individual needs of patients requiring IVIG therapy. As a specialty infusion pharmacy, our clinical teams have extensive training and experience in rare diseases, infusion therapies, and complex medical conditions. Knowledgeable pharmacists and care coordination staff guide each patient through the potential medication side effects and, working with the prescribing physician, help manage treatment to reduce the prevalence and severity of relapses.
We also administer in-home treatment to provide a more comfortable and convenient infusion experience. The result is safe, consistent, and compassionate treatment for our patients with nursing needs. Where appropriate, our in-home nursing team trains patients to administer their own injectable or infusible drugs, fostering more independence. After the home visit and administration, our nurses also guide patients on continuing with their therapy, help minimize or manage side effects, and answer questions that patients may have throughout their treatment plan.
