A medical infusion delivers treatment directly into a person's bloodstream by inserting a small tube, called an intravenous (IV) line, into a vein, usually in the arm or hand.
Infusion therapy is the process of administering medication directly into the bloodstream, allowing it to work quickly in the body. This method provides providers with precise control over the dosage and delivery rate.
Infusion therapy is used to treat complex conditions that require specialty medications administered directly into the bloodstream. These include autoimmune diseases, immune deficiencies, neurological disorders, gastrointestinal conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, transplant-related therapies, and other rare diseases.
Infusion length varies based on the specific medication, your condition, and your prescribed treatment plan. Some infusions take 30 minutes, while others may take several hours. Your LUX Infusion care team will let you know what to expect before your first appointment.
Both deliver medication into a vein, but the method differs:
IV infusion: Medication flows slowly into your vein over time (anywhere from minutes to hours) through a bag or bottle connected to your IV line. This allows for controlled, steady delivery.
IV injection: Medication is pushed quickly into your vein in a matter of minutes.
There are also subcutaneous injections, in which medications are injected under the skin rather than into a vein. Your LUX Infusion care team will explain which method is right for your treatment.
